This pineapple banana smoothie is easily a new favorite recipe! It's thick, creamy, and tastes like a tropical treat.

You only need 5 ingredients and not even 5 minutes to make this refreshing drink that doubles as a healthy snack or easy breakfast. Plus, it's a hit with both kids and adults!

The tropical flavor of the pineapple pairs so well with the bananas and tastes similar to a creamsicle! But the best part is, by using frozen fruit, you'll end up with a thick smoothie that's reminiscent of a milkshake and honestly, who doesn't want that?

If you don't have bananas on hand, try making this pineapple mango smoothie!

  • It's naturally vegan, paleo, gluten free, and dairy free

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

*Full ingredients list and measurements can be found in recipe card below*

ingredients to make a banana pineapple smoothie labeled with black text.
  • Frozen pineapple: Usually I cut and freeze my own pineapple, but you can use store bought if you prefer
  • Frozen banana: Just like the pineapple, it's more cost effective to freeze your own bananas rather than buying them
  • Maple syrup: I use maple syrup to sweet my pineapple banana smoothie, but you can also use honey or a pitted date
  • Ground flaxseed: The ground flaxseed adds some protein, fiber, and healthy fats- all which will help keep you fuller longer
  • Almond milk: Almond milk is used to blend the frozen fruit into a creamy, thick consistency, but any non-dairy milk will work

How To Make A Pineapple Banana Smoothie

  1. To a high-speed blender add the frozen fruit, maple syrup, ground flaxseeds, and almond milk
  2. Blend on high until smooth and creamy
  3. Pour into your glass, serve, and enjoy!

Optional Add-ins and Toppings

While this pineapple banana smoothie is delicious as is, these optional add-ins can help boost the nutrition of this (already healthy) tropical smoothie.

  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are highly nutritious, and packed with healthy fats and fiber
  • Hemp seeds: Hemp seeds are a good addition for healthy carbs, fats, and protein
  • Greek yogurt: Although not dairy free, Greek yogurt is a good protein boosting ingredient
  • Spinach: Spinach is a great source of Vitamins C and A as well as iron
  • Nut butters: Peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter, would all add protein and fat without taking away from the tropical flavor
  • Granola: Granola is a fun, crunchy topping that adds texture.
  • Shredded coconut: You can toast it and sprinkle over top of your smoothie for more flavor

How To Cut A Pineapple

  1. On a cutting board, use a sharp knife to chop off the stem and bottom of the pineapple to create a flat base
  2. Turn the pineapple upright and carefully cut about ¼ inch from the rind
  3. Find the core in the center and carefully cut around it
  4. Cut the pineapple into chunks and freeze or store in the fridge until needed

How To Make Smoothies Ahead Of Time

While nothing beats a freshly made pineapple smoothie, if you're looking to save time in the morning try one of these methods:

  1. Meal prep your ingredients: add all ingredients except almond milk to a freezer safe bag and store the freezer. When you're ready to make one, pull out a bag, dump ingredients into the blender, add the milk and blend
  2. Meal prep your smoothies: Make the smoothie and pour into an ice cube tray. Freeze the tray, then pop out smoothie cubes, add some milk, and blend when desired

Expert Tips

  • Use frozen fruit, your smoothie will be much creamier
  • Buy fruit on sale and freeze it to save money
  • Adjust the amount of maple syrup depending on how sweet your fruit is
  • Use any non-dairy milk you have on hand
  • Add frozen cauliflower rice for a flavorless boost of nutrients

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I boost the protein in my pineapple banana smoothie?

This smoothie naturally contains almost 4 grams of protein, but if you'd like to add more you can add more ground flaxseed, or add chia or hemp seeds as well.

You could also make the smoothie with soy milk or whole milk, both of which contain significantly higher protein than almond milk.

Can I add protein powder?

Sure! I usually like to add a scoop of vanilla protein powder because it enhances the flavor of the smoothie without overpowering it.

Is pineapple and banana good for you?

Yes, both pineapple and banana are very good fruits for you.
Pineapple is rich in Vitamin C, contains anti inflammatory properties, and may aid in digestion. Bananas are full of fiber, may help improve blood sugar levels, and can help you feel fuller longer.

What does a pineapple smoothie do for your body?

*disclaimer- I am not a licensed medical professional, so don't take this as medical advice*
Since pineapples are rich in Vitamin C, they can help boost your immune system which will help protect your body against the common cold. They're also anti inflammatory and may help to alleviate nausea.
