If you're not a fan of peanut butter, allergic to nuts, or are just looking for a fun way to add variety to your afternoon snack, then you've got to try this homemade granola butter!
It's a creamy spread made from oats, which give it a warm, nutty flavor similar to that of granola! You only need a couple of pantry ingredients and not even 5 minutes to mix it up.
Use it with apples or bananas, make ants on a log, or even a granola butter and jelly sandwich if you're feeling adventurous!
What Is Granola Butter?
You may be wondering, "What exactly is granola butter?" Well basically, it's similar to a nut butter spread, except instead of peanuts, almonds, or cashews, it's made from oats.
This healthy spread packs all the flavors and health benefits of granola into one little jar. It's full of whole grains and healthy fats, and is also vegan, gluten free, and nut free as well.
Ingredients In Homemade Granola Butter
*full ingredients list and measurements can be found in recipe card below*

- Oats: Oats are the base for our butter and gives it a warm, nutty flavor. You'll need either rolled oats or old fashioned
- Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds are added to bulk up the fat content of the oats as well as add some protein
- Avocado oil: I like using avocado oil to thin out the spread because it's a neutral, flavorless oil
- Coconut oil: Coconut oil is blended in to give the granola butter a spreadable texture
- Maple syrup: The maple syrup sweetens it and adds a nice, mild maple flavor that pairs well with the warm oat flavor
- Spices: I like to mix in cinnamon, allspice, and a little salt
Optional Add-Ins
- Shredded coconut: I prefer to use unsweetened coconut to keep this refined sugar free
- Seeds: You could add in some chia or flax seeds
- Cocoa powder: Regular unsweetened cocoa or Dutch processed would work to add a chocolatey twist
- Vanilla extract
How To Make Granola Butter
- Add old fashioned oats and hemp seeds to the base of a high speed blender and blend on high until they reach a very fine, powdery consistency
- Pour the avocado oil, melted coconut oil, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and allspice into the blended oats and blend again
- Pour the spread into a jar, stir in the maple syrup until just combined, then put the lid on and store until needed

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Less expensive: 1 jar of store-bought granola butter goes for almost $13 dollars! When instead, you can make a version that's just as good (if not better) for a fraction of the cost.
- It's allergen friendly: This recipe is gluten free (if you buy certified gluten free oats), dairy free, nut free, and soy free. Additionally, it's also vegan ad refined sugar free
- It can be made in 5 minutes: That's right, this homemade oat spread only takes minutes to make right in the blender. It's extremely easy and a great recipe for beginner cooks to make
- Nutritious: I'm not sure I would call this 'healthy' but, there is a lot of good nutrients found in it. The oats are a good source of whole grains, avocado and coconut oil are healthy fats, plus it's only sweetened with maple syrup so it's refined sugar free as well
- Versatile: There's so many ways to use this homemade oat butter! You can enjoy it as a snack with apple slices, make a granola butter and jelly sandwich, or even warm it up and drizzle over ice cream. Be sure to check out all my suggestions down below!

Storing Instructions
Since this granola butter is homemade and there's no preservatives in it, it's best to store any leftovers in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. It will stay good for up to 3 weeks.
If you want it to last longer, you can keep it in the fridge for up to 2 months. If you got this route, you'll want to allow the oat spread to come to room temperature before using for best results.
Expert Recipe Tips
- Make it with certified gluten free oats. I like using Bob's Red Mill
- If you don't have avocado oil you can substitute with another neutral flavored oil
- When adding in the maple syrup, don't over mix or it could end up gummy
- The oat spread will harden once cooled, but you can microwave for 10-20 seconds if you want to drizzle it
- Homemade granola butter is best kept in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for 3 weeks or in the fridge for 2 months
Is Homemade Granola Butter Healthy?
I wouldn't necessarily say this recipe is healthy, but it's not unhealthy either. It's full of whole grains from the oats, healthy fats from both avocado and coconut oil, and natural sweetener thanks to the maple syrup.
I suggest enjoying it in moderation and pairing it with a source of protein to best support your blood sugar.
