Key Ingredients Needed
*for the full list of ingredients and measurements, see recipe card below*
- Bone broth: I prefer the taste of chicken bone broth in my hot chocolate, but beef will work as well.
- Milk: For the richest texture, whole milk or even half and half is best. However, you can make this recipe with any milk you have on hand.
- Cocoa powder: This recipe was made with Dutch processed cocoa powder, however, any will work. Unsweetened cocoa powder is great if you have it, or you can use cacao powder for more nutrients.
- Sweetener: You can use any sweetener you'd prefer for this recipe. Granulated sugar or brown sugar work, or you can use maple syrup or monk fruit if you don't want added sugar.
How To Make Bone Broth Hot Chocolate
STEP ONE: In a small pot, add all ingredients and set over medium low heat.
STEP TWO: Whisking occasionally, heat the bone broth hot chocolate until it is warmed through and the cocoa powder has dissolved.
STEP THREE: Pour into your favorite mug, top with marshmallows (if desired) and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Don't use a flavored bone broth: There's some companies that have flavored bone broth, but for this you only want plain.
- Heat over the stove: I've found that the stove gives a more even heating experience.
- Add flavors: You can add ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract or peppermint extract for a festive twist
- Fun toppings: Bone broth hot chocolate can be topped with marshmallows (homemade or store bought), whipped cream, or a sprinkle of crushed candy canes!
- Double the recipe: Want to make some for you and a friend? You can easily double (or triple!) the recipe to share.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, if you don't have chicken bone broth, beef bone broth also works. Just make sure it's bone broth and not regular broth so you get the added nutrients.
You can really use any kind of milk that you have on hand. I prefer a creamier milk like whole milk or even half and half to get that thick hot chocolate taste and texture.
Make Ahead and Storing Instructions
Make ahead- you can make bone broth hot chocolate 2 days in advance. Just make it, store in an airtight container (like a Mason jar), then pour into a mug and reheat in the microwave when desired.
Storing- If you make a bit too much you can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
