- Almond Milk: Be sure to use an unsweetened almond milk so there's no added sugar. Hemp, soy, or coconut milk are also great low-carb substitutions
- Cocoa Powder: Use a good quality cocoa powder. My favorite is Hershey's
- Monk fruit: Monk fruit sweetens the hot chocolate without any added sugar. My favorite brands to use are either Lakanto or Whole Earth.
SWEETENER SUBSTITUTIONS
If you don't want to use monk fruit, these are some other healthy sugar substitutes:
- Maple syrup
- Coconut sugar
- Honey
- Stevia
- Erythritol
HOW TO MAKE SUGAR FREE HOT CHOCOLATE
- In a small pot, over medium/ low heat, add the almond milk, cocoa powder, and monk fruit
- Whisk all ingredients together and bring to a low boil. Boil for 3 minutes, whisking occasionally, then turn off heat
- Pour into a mug and enjoy!



HOW TO MAKE A LARGE BATCH OF HEALTHY SUGAR FREE HOT COCOA
This recipe makes enough for 2 servings, if you'd like to make a large batch of this sugar free hot chocolate to serve to a crowd, follow these measurements:
To Make 8 Servings:
- 8 Cups of Unsweetened Almond Milk
- 1 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 Cup Monk Fruit
Pro Tip! Make this in your slow cooker, by adding all ingredients and cooking it on low for 30 minutes.
TOPPING IDEAS AND VARIATIONS
In my opinion, hot chocolate without toppings is just warm chocolate milk. Here's a yummy topping ideas for you to enjoy!
- Mini marshmallows
- Sugar free whipped cream
- Whipped coconut cream (vegan)
- Sprinkles
- Chopped peanut butter cups
- Crushed peppermint candies
Variations:
- Peppermint hot chocolate: Stir in ½-3/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract
- Add a dash of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
- Pour in 1 teaspoon of vanilla

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
While this recipe does taste best when made fresh, you can keep leftovers if there is any. Pour the leftovers into a large Mason jar with a lid and keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
