I know it's controversial, but the only hot drink I really like is hot chocolate. I've always wanted to like coffee or tea, and I've tried them both multiple times in order to make myself enjoy them, but I just don't.

Recently though, it was a chilly morning and I desperately wanted a warm drink but wasn't feeling a sweet hot cocoa. I remembered I had matcha powder in the cabinet, decided to try making a latte, and I've been OBSESSED with them ever since.

I haven't gone a day without one which is why I knew I needed to share this oat milk matcha latte with you! It's healthy, simple, and takes just 5 minutes to make.

There's no need to run to Starbucks when you can make a latte that tastes better, is less expensive, and contains higher quality ingredients right in your own home. Be sure to pair with these crazy delicious oat milk pancakes for a healthy breakfast!

If you want a fun twist, try this strawberry matcha latte or make this soothing honey and lemon tea!

Matcha is a type of green tea that comes in a powdered form and is chocked full or antioxidants. The green tea powder is dissolved in warm water, mixed up, and consumed as is. With it's bright green color and numerous health benefits, matcha tea is a popular coffee shop drink that's just as easy to make at home!

INGREDIENTS IN AN OAT MILK MATCHA LATTE

ingredients for an oat milk matcha latte labeled with black text.
  • Matcha powder: You can find matcha powder in most grocery stores. There's two types of matcha culinary grade and ceremonial grade. Ceremonial grade is the highest quality, but I typically use Jade Leaf Organic Matcha powder which is culinary grade and LOVE it.
  • Oat milk: Oat milk is creamier and sweeter than most non-dairy milks. Look for a good brand such as Elmhurst or Oat Malk because they have the cleanest ingredients
  • Brown sugar: I prefer brown sugar as the main sweetener in my matcha latte because I like the warm notes it gives off. Usually I use PureCane's brown sweetener to keep my drink sugar free
  • Water: Matcha needs to be dissolved in warm, but not boiling water. The best temperature is around 170-175 degrees F

Substitutions:

  • Oat milk: This recipe is for an OAT MILK matcha latte, but any non dairy milk such as almond, cashew, or coconut will also work. If you're not dairy free, whole or raw milk make a super creamy latte
  • Brown sugar: You can substitute it with coconut sugar, maple syrup or agave for a vegan version. Honey will also work but isn't vegan

EXPERT TIPS

  • Use quality matcha powder
  • A good brand of oat milk makes all the difference
  • Add more sweetener if you like a sweeter latte
  • Make sure the water isn't too hot when you dissolve the matcha
  • Blend your oat milk or use a milk frother for a super creamy latte

VARIATIONS OF AN OAT MILK MATCHA LATTE

Mocha: Add 1-2 teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder

Cinnamon: Mix in ⅛-1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, depending on your taste

Make it sweeter: I typically use 1 tablespoon of sweetener, but feel free to add more if desired

Higher protein: Substitute the oat milk with soy milk and dissolve 1 scoop of vegan protein powder into the milk while it is warming

Not dairy free: If you don't have oat milk, whole or raw milk are great substitutes for those who don't need it dairy free

Hot or iced: See directions above for making either an iced or hot oat milk matcha latte

FAQs

How do I store matcha powder?

Matcha powder is best stored in a cool, dry place.
You also don't want to store it in a glass jar because of the light that it would be exposed to. I usually keep mine in the bag it came in, in my closed tea cabinet.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Yes, there's about 20-30 grams of caffeine per serving. That's about ⅓ the amount that you'll find in a cup of coffee.

What type of milk is best for a matcha latte?

I think that oat milk is best because it's much creamier than other non dairy milks such as almond or soy. Coconut milk is another creamy non dairy option, but whole or raw milk are also great if you're not dairy free or vegan.

Why is my matcha bitter?

If your latte tastes bitter, the water you dissolved the matcha powder in was too hot. If it's boiling or above 175 degrees F the chlorophyll in the matcha powder will break down causing it to taste bitter.
