Ingredient Notes And Substitutions
*Full ingredients list and measurements can be found in the recipe card below*

- Coconut Oil: I like using coconut oil for dairy free baking because it's a healthy fat, and isn't full of highly process ingredients. Personally, I use unrefined coconut oil, but you can use refined coconut oil if you don't want to taste any coconut flavor
- Brown sugar: The brown sugar ensures these cookies are chewy and flavorful. I don't suggest substituting with white sugar because they will be crispier
- Egg: Eggs act as a binder for the cookie dough and also add moisture. You can try and use a flax egg if you want to make these vegan.
- Flour: I make my dairy free chocolate chip cookies with all purpose flour, however you can use a gluten free 1:1 flour if you'd like. I like using King Arthur or Bob's Red Mill
- Cornstarch: This helps the cookies to bake up softer and more tender than regular cookies, but you can substitute with flour if you don't have any
- Chocolate: For the chocolate you will need dairy free chocolate chips as well as vegan dark chocolate. For the chocolate chips I like the brand Enjoy Life and vegan chocolate bars can be found in most grocery stores. You can also regular chocolate chips if not dairy free
How To Make Dairy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
1: Cream together the coconut oil, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract

2: Gently mix in flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt

3: Gently fold in the chocolate chips

4: Scoop and bake for 8-10 minutes and finish with a sprinkle of sea salt

Expert Dairy Free Baking Tips
- Use coconut oil that is at room temperature, but not melted
- If you don't want to taste any coconut flavor, use refined coconut oil
- Do not over mix the chocolate chip cookie dough or the cookies will be tough once baked
- Before baking, top the cookie dough balls with extra chocolate for that 'bakery style' look
- Bake 8-10 minutes only, they'll look under done but the residual heat from the baking sheet will finish them to perfection
Serving And Storing Instructions
You can serve dairy free chocolate chips on their own with a glass of almond milk, but they're also really great with a mug of dairy free hot chocolate or dairy free eggnog.
To store leftovers, keep them in an airtight container for up to 4 days at room temperature. You can also freeze baked and cooled chocolate chip cookies in a freezer safe bag for up to three months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most of the time you can use a dairy free butter in any chocolate chip cookie recipe. You can also try using coconut oil, but the texture will be a little bit different if the recipe isn't designed for it.
As long as the chocolate products don't contain any sort of milk fat or milk solid you're usually good. Some may say "Cocoa Butter," but that isn't any sort of dairy product, it comes from the fat of the cacao bean.
Here are some of my favorite dairy free chocolate brands:
-HU
-Alter Eco
-Endangered Species
-Green and Black's
Nestle semi sweet chocolate chips contain milkfat so they're not diary free, but they do have an allergen free variety you may be able to find at Walmart.
You should be able to find dairy free chocolate chips in the baking aisle of your local grocery store. I usually use Enjoy Life, but if you can't find them you can always chop up a dark chocolate bar.
I have not tested them myself, but you should be about to use a 1:1 gluten free all purpose flour.
No, there is no need to chill this cookie dough. As with most of my cookies, I prefer them to be baked immediately so there's minimal time between making and eating dessert.
