This Sourdough French Toast is easily one of my favorite breakfasts to make. It’s a simple, delicious French toast recipe made with just 5 ingredients. Crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle, top with maple syrup and berries for an amazing weekend breakfast option.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  1. 4 Slices of Sourdough Bread (I like mine to be thick)
  2. 1 cup Almond Milk
  3. 1/4 cup Arrowroot Starch
  4. 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  5. 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  6. Cinnamon- 1 teaspoon optional but recommended

Instructions

  1. In a large non-stick skillet, melt some coconut oil over medium heat
  2. In a shallow baking dish, whisk together almond milk, arrowroot starch, brown sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Take a piece of thick cut sourdough bread and soak both sides in the custard mixture
  4. Place the soaked piece of bread into the hot skillet and repeat step 3 with the second piece of bread
  5. When both pieces are in the skillet, cook them about 4-5 minutes per side until they are golden brown and crisp
  6. Once both sides are golden brown, remove them from the pan and repeat with any remaining bread
  7. Serve with maple syrup, fresh berries, and enjoy

Notes

  • Day old sourdough bread is the best
  • This recipe is easy to double or triple for families
  • Cornstarch can be substituted for arrowroot starch or tapioca starch
  • A dash of cinnamon adds even more flavor
  • For best results, serve immediately
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days
