The Best Sourdough Grilled Cheese

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This sourdough grilled cheese is one of the best sandwiches you'll sink your teeth into. Golden, buttery sourdough bread, piled high with melty sharp cheddar, smoked turkey, and crunchy apples, all tied together with tangy Dijon mustard. This easy sandwich will be the best grilled cheese sandwich you've had in a long time. It's a great recipe for rainy days, cozy evenings, or quite frankly, just because! Read below to find out why it's so great.

You may have had good grilled cheese sandwiches in the past, but none will even come close to the top spot once you try my easy sourdough grilled cheese! Ok, that may be a biiiiit of a stretch. However, I can most definitely assure you that this is one heck of a sandwich. Sourdough is the best bread for grilled cheese because it crisps up so nicely, has a bit of a tang that tastes so good with melted cheese, plus it's super hearty and can withstand a loaded grilled cheese! And let me tell you, this grilled cheese is loaded.

You bite into a toasted piece of sourdough, gooey, melty cheese, smoked turkey, and crunchy apples, all tied together with Dijon mustard. Doesn't that just make your mouth water? It sure works for me, in fact I wish I was eating that as I type this post....but carrot fries will have to suffice. Anyway, I sincerely hope you enjoy this great grilled cheese as much as me and my family did!

WHAT YOU NEED FOR SOURDOUGH GRILLED CHEESE

sourdough grilled cheese ingredients on a gray backdrop labeled with black text.
  • Sourdough bread: I used store bought, but you could also use homemade! Any type of sourdough will work.
  • Shredded cheese: I'm a big fan of sharp cheddar (best cheese IMO) for this particular sandwich, but Monterey or pepper jack would also be good
  • Turkey: Applegate Smoked Turkey is the best! Plus, it doesn't have any weird ingredients
  • Apple: You'll want thin slices of your favorite apple, I used a honeycrisp!
  • Dijon mustard: The tang and bite of the mustard pairs so well with the rest of the sandwich ingredients, you definitely don't want to skip this
  • Butter: Essential for the perfect golden brown crust on this hearty grilled cheese

HOW TO MAKE A GRILLED CHEESE ON SOURDOUGH

Prepare your ingredients
open face grilled cheese being assembled on brown parchment paper.
Assemble the sandwich
two sourdough sandwiches cooking in a cast iron skillet.
Cool until bread is golden and cheese is melted
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add in a little bit of butter to melt along the bottom
  2. While the pan is heating up, assemble your sandwich. Take a slice of bread, spread on 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, sprinkle over ¼ cup of shredded cheese, overlap 2 slices of turkey, place on a line of thinly sliced apple, sprinkle over another ¼ cup of cheese, and finally top with a second piece of bread that's been spread with another tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
  3. Place the sandwich into the hot, buttered pan and cook over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown. Carefully use a rubber spatula to flip and cook the other side until it's golden and the cheese is melty.
  4. Take the sourdough grilled cheese out of the pan, place on a cutting board, cut in half, and enjoy!

GRILLED CHEESE VARIATIONS

If you're looking for more ways to spice up a grilled cheese, try one of these great combos!

  • Replace the apple in this sandwich with caramelized onions
  • Use a combination of cheeses: gruyere, swiss, fontina, havarti, provolone, muenster, parmesan cheese are all good!
  • Grilled ham and cheese is a family favorite
  • Peach jam and cheddar cheese
  • Use different meats: bacon, salami, prosciutto, chicken
  • Make a breakfast grilled cheese with bacon and eggs!
  • American cheese, spicy mustard, and tomato (my dad's personal favorite)

EXPERT TIPS

  • Read the entire recipe before making
  • Don't use thick slices of sourdough, or else that'll over cook before the cheese is melted
  • Feel free to butter the outside of the bread instead of melting it in the pan
  • Use high quality ingredients for the best flavor
  • I recommend using a non-stick pan or cast iron skillet so any cheese drippings will easily come off
  • Let the sandwich rest for a minute or so before cutting it so the cheese can settle and your grilled cheese won't slide apart
  • Serve with a bowl of tomato soup for a delicious dinner, perfect for cozy, rainy days

FAQs

  1. What cheese goes well with sourdough? Sharp cheddar, swiss, gruyere, brie, and Monterey jack are all great to balance the tangy sourdough bread.
  2. Is mayo better than butter for grilled cheese? I MUCH prefer butter, but I also have a personal vendetta against mayo lol. This perfect grilled cheese recipe will be great with either though.
  3. How many people does this serve? It depends on who is eating it...my mom and I split one while my dad would eat a whole.
  4. Am I able to reheat leftover grilled cheese? You most definitely are! Reheat over medium-low heat in a lightly buttered pan with a lid for a few minutes, until the cheese is melty.
