All About Dragon Fruit!
What Is Dragon Fruit?
Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit that grows on a type of cactus plants. It's native to Mexico and Central America, though today it's grown all over the world.
What Does Dragon Fruit Taste Like?
It has a mild, sweet flavor that's commonly described as being a mix between a kiwi and a pear.
Is Dragon Fruit A Superfood?
Yes, it is considered a superfood due to it's impressive nutrient structure. This fruit is low in calories and high in fiber, antioxidants, and iron.
Personally, I don't like to call any one food a "superfood," so I suggest enjoying it occasionally as you would any other food. It's best to have a well rounded diet, not just rely on one food.
Is Dragon Fruit The Same As Pitaya?
Yes, pitaya is just another name for dragon fruit. It's also known as pitahaya and strawberry pear.
Dragon Fruit Smoothie Ingredients
*fill ingredients list and measurements can be found in recipe card below*

- Dragon fruit: I prefer to buy frozen dragon fruit rather than fresh and preparing it myself.
- Banana: For a thick, creamy smoothie it's best to use frozen bananas. You can buy them already frozen or peel and freeze the bananas yourself.
- Orange juice: Fresh squeezed orange juice has the best flavor, but any will work
- Honey: If your fruit isn't super sweet, you may want to add a little bit of honey. You could also use maple syrup or coconut sugar if you want a vegan option
- Almond milk: To make this pitaya smoothie dairy free I like to use almond milk. You can also use cashew milk, soy milk, or coconut milk if you'd prefer
How To Make A Pitaya Smoothie
- Add all ingredients into the base of a high-speed blender
- Blend on high until your smoothie is thick and creamy
- Pour into glasses, serve immediately, and enjoy

Variations and Add-Ins
While this stunning pitaya smoothie is delicious as is, these optional add-ins can help boost the nutrition of this (already healthy) tropical smoothie.
- Chia seeds: Chia seeds are extremely nutritious, and packed with healthy fats and fiber
- Hemp seeds: Hemp seeds are a healthy addition for good carbs, fats, and protein
- Greek yogurt: Although not dairy free, Greek yogurt is a good ingredient to boost protein
- Cauliflower rice: Blend some frozen cauliflower right into your smoothie for a flavorless nutrition booster
- Nut butters: Peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter, would all add protein and fat, but because the dragon fruit has such a mild flavor it may overpower it
- Granola: Granola is a fun, crunchy topping that adds texture.
- Shredded coconut: Feel free to toast it and sprinkle on top of your smoothie for more tropical flavor
Expert Tips
- Use frozen banana and pitaya chunks, your smoothie will be so much creamier
- Buy your fruit on sale and freeze it yourself to save money
- Adjust the amount of honey depending on how sweet your fruit is
- Substitute the almond milk with any non-dairy milk you have in your fridge
- Best served fresh, I suggest enjoying immediately for best results

Making A Dragon Fruit Smoothie Ahead Of Time
While nothing is better than a fresh dragon fruit smoothie, if you're looking to save time in the morning or have them prepped for a snack try one of these methods:
- Meal prep the ingredients: Measure out the bananas and dragon fruit into a freezer safe bag and store the freezer. When you're ready to make a smoothie, pull out a bag, dump ingredients into the blender, add the milk, orange juice, and honey, and blend until smooth
- Meal prep your smoothies: Make the smoothie and pour it into an ice cube tray. Freeze the tray, then pop out smoothie cubes, add some almond milk, and blend until creamy
Frequently Asked Questions
Dragon fruit pairs well with a lot of tropical fruits! Bananas, pineapple, mango, orange, and lime all taste good and enhance the flavor of dragon fruit.
Sure, your favorite vanilla protein powder would be great added into this pitaya smoothie!
Yes, but it takes more prep work and needs to be frozen for the smoothie to be creamy. Also, most grocery store dragon fruits are white, so it won't have this bright pink color.

Had this for breakfast this morning! I halved the recipe (for a meal serving) and appreciated the suggestion to add greek yogurt and chia seeds! Yum! I like to put granola on the bottom of my smoothie (as well as topping it) since the texture is so good at the end. I didn’t even use honey since my banana was super ripe, and it was plenty sweet on its own. Thanks for another fabulous recipe!
Oh, and just a heads up: if you cut up your own dragon fruit and freeze it, it won’t be as pink in the picture since most dragon fruits they sell in the produce section are the white kind. But that’s ok! It still had a tinge of pink and the taste was spot on 🙂
