smashed potatoes in the air fryer on a white platter topped with herbs.

These air fryer smashed potatoes are incredible! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and ready in under 30 minutes. This easy recipe makes a great appetizer, side dish, or breakfast!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound baby potatoes (I use Yukon gold)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Clean and dry your baby potatoes and then place them into your air fryer basket
  2. Cook the whole potatoes at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes until they're fork tender
  3. Dump the cooked potatoes out onto a baking sheet and smash them down with the bottom of a cup
  4. Once they're all smashed, melt your butter in a small pot on the stove and stir in salt, garlic powder, pepper, paprika, onion powder, and Italian seasoning. Use a pastry brush to brush the top of the potatoes with the seasoned melted butter
  5. When they're all coated, place potatoes back into your air fryer basket in a single layer and cook at 400 degrees F for 6-8 minutes until golden brown and crispy
  6. Use a flat spatula to take them out of the basket, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Don't overcook the potatoes initially, you want them just to be fork tender
  • Use the bottom of a glass, a potato masher, or a fork to smash them down
  • Don't melt the butter until the potatoes are done cooking
  • Line the bottom of your air fryer with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy clean up
  • Cooking time will vary based on the size of the potatoes
  • Serve immediately, the longer they sit the more they'll lose that crispiness
