What It Caprese Salad?
A classic caprese salad is a traditional Italian salad that's made up of slices of tomato and mozzarella that are seasoned with salt, olive oil, and fresh basil leaves.
It is usually served as a starter instead of a side dish, and is believed to have originated on the island Capri, which is how it got its name. Also, caprese salad is just one way a caprese dish is served, you can also find it served as pasta, a sandwich, or pizza.

What Is Burrata Cheese?
Burrata cheese is a traditional, fresh, Italian cheese that is made from cow's milk. While it's easy to mistake this delicious cheese as mozzarella, and you wouldn't be entirely wrong, it is different.
The outer skin is made up of smooth mozzarella, but the real star is the interior. Once you cut into it you'll be surprised to see delicate cheese curds that have been soaked in cream oozing out of the center. It comes packaged in liquid to keep it fresh, help hold its shape, and prevent it from flattening.
This is a fresh cheese and once opened, will stay good in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Burrata Caprese Salad Ingredients

- Tomatoes: New Jersey is known for their fresh tomatoes so I like to use them, but plum or beefsteak tomatoes also work
- Burrata cheese: You can usually find this near the deli section of your local grocery store
- Basil leaves: You want fresh basil, not dried, for the best flavor
- Balsamic glaze: I like using Nona Pia's balsamic glaze, but any store bought brand will work.
- Salt and black pepper: Traditional caprese salad only uses salt, but I like the hint of spice from the pepper
How To Make Caprese Salad With Burrata
- On a cutting board, use a sharp knife to cut your tomatoes into equally thick slices
- Arrange the tomato slices on a serving platter, placing the room temperature ball of burrata into the center
- Sprinkle the salt and black pepper evenly over the top and tear a few basil leaves and distribute them around the platter
- Drizzle over your balsamic glaze and serve!

Ingredient Substitutions and Additions
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Tomatoes: Substitute with beefsteak tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes (these would be SO pretty), or cherry tomatoes
Balsamic glaze: If you can't find it, balsamic vinegar or a vinaigrette will work, also, you can make your own. Use this recipe here!
Salt and black pepper: I always use Himalayan pink salt, but kosher salt, flaky salt, or even table salt also work. *Please note* you can take the pepper out entirely if it's not your thing.
ADDITIONS:
- A light drizzle of olive oil (make sure it's good olive oil and has a nice flavor)
- Ripe peaches, nectarines, or plums- any stone fruit is a great addition and adds to that summery vibe
- Roast the tomatoes first
- Use fresh basil pesto in place of the leaves of basil
- Add sliced avocado
- Add more balls of burrata! There's never enough when it comes to this delicious, creamy cheese

What To Serve With Burrata Caprese salad
Traditionally, caprese salad is served as a starter and can be paired with crusty bread. If you want it as a side dish, pair it with one of these meals!
- Air fryer chicken legs
- Air fryer boneless chicken thighs
- Gluten free crab cakes
- Whole air fryer rotisserie chicken
How To Store
You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Store the slices of tomato in a separate container than the burrata so that the tomato juices don't leak into the cheese.
When you're ready to enjoy more, simply pull out however many slices of tomato you want, along with your desired amount of cheese, drizzle on a little more balsamic glaze, and enjoy.
Expert Tips
- Burrata doesn't last well outside of the liquid it's stored in, so put it out right before you're ready to serve
- You can slice tomatoes ahead of time
- Add a drizzle of olive oil for more flavor
Frequently Asked Questions
You can, but I suggest just getting all the pieces together and then assembling it right before you wish to serve it.
You can cut the tomatoes, tear the basil, and let the burrata come to room temperature (but keep it in the liquid in the container). Right before you're ready to serve, assemble it on the platter and you're good to go.
Yes and no, Burrata is essentially cream soaked cheese curds that are wrapped in a ball of fresh mozzarella cheese.
